Allen's Man Eating Mako Shark - Rebuild #1

Allen's Man Eating Mako Shark!
Rebuild #1...

Updated: 6/25/98

This rebuild was done in the Summer of 1997. I limited the scope of the rebuild to new cylinder heads, cam and exhaust system, including headers in an effort to save some money and get the car back on the road quickly. Sadly, it wasn't to be...

Set your way back machine to September of '97....

These new S/R Torquer 67cc cylinder heads are on the car for now, as one of the original '186 heads was found to be cracked after the car dropped a cylinder. They feature 1.6" and 2.02" valves and longer runners for more torque than the stock heads.

I purchased the new heads from Dennis Smith at Internet Racer's Supply.

A VERY expensive replacement core is on the way from Tracy Performance with a similar date code.

Here are a pair of photos of Jeff Stevens (on the left) and Jeff Stevens and my self (below, right) with dueling torque wrenches blazing in the summer sun working on installing the ARP head bolts.

I have also installed a CompCams Extreme Energy cam (straight up, no advance), roller chain and timing set in the car. Click here for an ASCII copy of the cam card.
Along with the new heads and cam shaft, I have also installed Hooker Metallic Ceramic Coated Super Comp Headers (say THAT 3 times fast!) and CompCams 1.6:1 Pro Magnum roller rockers to get as much out of the engine as possible without replacing any of the rotating assembly or re-working the block. (pix to come!). The QuadraJet sits on top of an Edelbrock Performer dual plane intake.
This Edelbrock intake is well known to greatly improve torque and HP over the stock cast iron unit. I am hoping that the combination of the intake and the longer runners in the S/R heads will make up for the lower compression ratio (~10.4:1, same as the LT1 engine found in the C4) the 67cc heads yield compared to the stock 11:1 heads.

I could have spent the extra cash to have the S/R heads ported and polished etc., but since I am having the '186 heads reworked for eventual re-installation on the engine, I elected not to.
Other trick parts include: Taylor Spiro-Pro 8mm spark plug wires, an MSD Ignition 6AL ignition box, MSD Pro Billet Corvette tach drive distributor (p/n 8572) and an MSD Blaster 2 coil along with other cool widgets and gadgets.
