What all this noise about the 21st Century Fox Foxcall anyways?
21st Century Fox fans are invited to fire up their copy of Speak Freely, a very competent free Windows and *nix internet "telephone" program, and join in on a 21st Century Fox Foxcall using a fan provided server as the conference call "hub".
I will also be setting up an irc channel on the undernet irc network as a back channel to the concall. Use this for tech support requests from other fans &ct. See the 21CF Fox forum for the irc channel name.
Sounds Cool, how do I participate?
You need three simple things to participate:
Please actually read the very simple Speak Freely instructions. Pay particular attention on the instructions in the Help -> FAQ section on how to adjust the microphone volume - you need to turn that up so others can hear you clearly.
NEW: A Microphone How To for Windows 2000, 98/ME. or NT can be Found Here.
I personally will not be answering technical questions on how to use the software, I simply don't have the time. There are ample online resources and forums mentioned in the Speak Freely docs to help you out in the unlikely event that you have problems.
Yes! Mr. Kellogg has indicated that he will indeed be participating in our inaugural FoxCall!
Please keep in mind: This is a by the fans, for the fans event. This is not a "Grill the artist and stick a fork in him to see if he's done" type event, nor is it an "officially sanctioned by the artist" type event. Further FoxCalls may or may not happen depending on how the inaugural call goes. Mr. Kellogg may or not be able to participate in any future FoxCalls.
Which CODEC do I use? This is subject to changing depending on my availability, so please keep an eye on the 21st Century Fox forum for any 21CF FoxCall announcements. The server will be online approximately 30 minutes before and after the scheduled FoxCall time.
Currently the Speak Freely server's IP address is 24.234.45.40, the host name is www.caspeed.com. Remember, this is subject to change!
When is the call?Use the default GSM codec.
See the Forum for the FoxCall announcement.
How do I use my Forum avatar icon?
Select Options -> Show Your Face and select the same image you use in the forum for your avatar.
How do I see the other caller's avatar images?
Select Options -> Look Who's Talking
My avatar is animated, will it still work?
No, the animation won't work. Only the first frame of the animation will be displayed.
Notes on images:
It takes a few moment to exchange the avatar images. This will slow your
initial connection down a touch, please give your computer a few moments to
exchange the images with the other PC. Images are only exchanged at the beginning
of the call when you first connect.
I don't know if everyone will be able to see all the participating concall avatar images or not. You may only be able to see the concall server's avatar image.
How many people can participate at once?My cable modem is 128Kbps up, 512kbps down. If everyone was speaking at once, perhaps 7 people. If only one or two people are speaking, perhaps 15. If this takes off in a big way and my connection becomes swamped, we'll sniff around for bandwidth on another server.
Similar recommendations apply as if you were in a conference call at work
It's best if one person speaks at a time.
Speak a bit more slowly and deliberately than usual.
Announce your arrival or departure when appropriate.
Preface your comments with "This is name/handle" so people know who's talking. Use of your 21st Century Fox forum handle is highly encouraged.
Remember international folks will have a short delay in both hearing and speaking, this can lead to some weird topic overlapping similar to irc, so be tolerant/aware of "wire time" delays.
During the "prime time" hours of 1PM to 3PM, please keep the conversation topics close to 21st Century Fox.
Like 21st Century Fox, this is a PG rated voice forum, so mind your language please. Abuse of the Foxcall will result in rabid gerbils infesting your shorts and booting/banning from the Foxcall.
Allen Woolley, aka Mako on the 21st Century Fox Forum dreamed this up. Leave me private Email on the forum if you need to get a hold of me.
