ATL Fuel Cell Installation

Photos of the fuel cell install Dave Herlinger is doing on
my 1969 Corvette. The most recent images are at the top.

Recommendation: Make your browser window wide enough so the images appear in pairs.

I will be adding to this gallery as the work progresses.

5/15/02: The completed cage assembly ready to install in the car. Note the
compound angles on the brackets - some very complex fabrication work was
performed here. The powder coating by Spray Technology sure looks nice too.

Also shown is the hatch (inside the car) that covers the large hole cut into
the rear to clearance the cell. Finally, an image of the Ford F-40 Lemans
cap that will be installed. This will be mounted on the deck and just be eye
candy for now. The parts to make it all work aren't on hand, and some
fiberglass on the rear deck work is required to install it properly.

2/10/02: First real mock up to dial in the mounting location of the cell
and the fill pipe. Note the top plate is a new one provided by ATL after
they muffed up and sent a plate with the fill pipe mounted off center :-/

The cage is just tack welded in at this point. Note how the cage is mounted
high enough that it's pretty much invisible from the rear of the car. I will
eventually be blocking off the exhaust cutouts when I paint the car.

2/2/02: Test fitting the cage - discover the rearmost cross member bent
from a hit to the right rear corner of the car sometime in the distant past:

1/27/02: Clearancing the body to fit the cell:

12-31-01: Fuel cell cage details. Note the top plate is not correct due to the
off center fill pipe. We have a new plate which will replace this one.
The cage will be powder coated black once it's done.
